Jane Stevenson, MP for Wolverhampton North East, has joined calls for hospitals to allow pregnant women to be accompanied to scans and births by families and loved ones.
It comes after a campaign launched by another female Conservative MP, Alicia Kearns, who is pregnant and has witnessed other expectant mothers having to attend scans and appointments alone.
Jane has now written to the Chief Executive of New Cross Hospital, David Loughton CBE, after one of her constituents contacted her to say that her pregnant daughter is not allowed to be accompanied there.
In her letter to Mr Loughton, Jane writes: “Attending antenatal appointments at hospital can be a stressful experience, especially for mothers with health concerns, and the support of their loved ones is invaluable.
“I am aware of further guidance published by NHS England last week which says that restrictions can be relaxed with the appropriate measures in place to mitigate the risk of coronavirus transmission. I hope that existing policies at New Cross Hospital will be adapted to reflect this.”
Jane has requested an update from New Cross Hospital outlining what steps they are taking to implement this guidance and allow partners and loved ones to accompany pregnant women as safely as possible.
More than 60 other MPs have written to their local NHS Trusts after becoming aware of women in their constituencies who have had to attend scans and even give birth without anyone to support them.
