Jane Stevenson, MP for Wolverhampton North East, has praised a popular pub in Ashmore Park for going “above and beyond” in its support for the estate during the coronavirus pandemic.
Presenting a Covid Community Hero certificate to the landlord and staff at the Ashmore Inn on Griffiths Drive, Jane congratulated them for running a food bank during the lockdowns when they were closed.
The pub also collected donations of items such as children’s toys and books, which were given to disadvantaged children who live on the Ashmore Park estate. At Christmas, they asked for donations of Christmas presents and were overwhelmed with the support they received from the local community.
Jane visited the pub in May last year to donate some items herself, and nominated the pub in PubAid’s Community Pub Hero Awards 2021. The certificate she presented to the Ashmore Inn is from the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, a cross-party group of MPs and Lords which Jane is a member of and which advocates the enormous contribution of brewing and pubs to the UK economy.
Jane said: “I was delighted to visit the Ashmore Inn and personally present a Covid Community Hero certificate to landlord Kevin Ward and the team. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the Ashmore Inn has gone above and beyond in its support for the Ashmore Park community.
“Their food bank received hundreds of donations from residents on the estate, and they also collected unwanted children’s toys and books which were then given to children and families on the estate who were struggling as a result of the pandemic.
“I was amazed when I visited the pub during lockdown to see the huge amount of support they received. The selflessness of so many people across Wolverhampton during the crisis has been overwhelming. I want to thank Kevin and the staff at the Ashmore Inn, as well as everyone who supported them, for what they have done.”
