Wolverhampton has received unprecedented economic support to protect jobs and businesses during the coronavirus outbreak.
Nearly 30,000 jobs have been protected across the city through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, with Government grants covering 80% of people’s wages up to a maximum of £2,500 per month.
And 6,800 self-employed people in Wolverhampton are receiving grants worth a total of £18.1 million from the Government to help with the impact of coronavirus.
Across the West Midlands, more than 697,000 people have been supported through the furlough scheme, and 185,000 self-employed people are receiving Government grants totalling £521 million thanks to the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme.
The Government’s top priority has always been to support people, protect jobs and businesses through the crisis, and the furlough and self-employment schemes have been a lifeline for millions of people and businesses across the country.
Wolverhampton North East MP Jane Stevenson MP said: “This is a hugely challenging time for people and businesses across Wolverhampton, and I am grateful for the Government’s generous schemes which have helped to protect the livelihoods of thousands of my constituents.
“This country has a world-leading economic response to coronavirus. As we move on to the second stage of the roadmap to recovery, I am determined to see our city’s economy rebuilt while people continue to receive the flexible support they need.
“I am working with the Government to do everything possible to ensure my constituents can pay their bills on time and put food on the table. It is so important that we all continue to stay alert, control the virus and save lives.”
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak MP said: “Our economic response to coronavirus was designed to keep people in work, protect people’s incomes, and support businesses. These measures have been on a scale unmatched by any government in recent history. All to give us the best chance of recovering quickly as the economy reopens.
“Now our energies are focused on getting people back to work safely, growing the economy and ensuring people can thrive in the new post-Covid world.”
