Wolverhampton North East MP Jane Stevenson has raised concerns over recent violent crime incidents in the city with the Home Secretary Priti Patel MP.
In a meeting in the House of Commons on Tuesday (21st July), Jane and Ms Patel also discussed knife crime, tackling County Lines drug dealers and the use of drugs such as cannabis and nitrous oxide.
Wolverhampton has seen a spate of violent crime incidents over recent weeks including the tragic murder of 24-year-old Paulius Petrasiunas in Heath Town, the stabbing of a 20-year-old man in Pendeford on Sunday (19th July), and another stabbing attack in Bushbury a week earlier (12th July).
In May, a man in his 20s was shot in the leg near the Shropshire Union Canal in Pendeford.
Earlier this week, Jane also spoke to Wolverhampton’s Chief Superintendent Andy Beard about these recent attacks and what action West Midlands Police is taking to prevent further crimes.
Following her meeting with the Home Secretary, Jane said: “I want to thank the Home Secretary for taking the time to meet with me and to listen to the concerns of many of my constituents about recent incidences of violent crime across Wolverhampton.
“The Home Secretary and I both share a commitment to make Wolverhampton’s streets as safe as possible, and there can be no excuse for the violence that we have seen.
“I am pleased that the Home Secretary has said she will do whatever is necessary to crack down on all types of crime – including the dealing and supply of drugs such as cannabis and nitrous oxide cannisters. This starts with hiring more police officers, and I’m glad to see that progress on recruiting 20,000 new officers is being made.”
