Wolverhampton North East MP Jane Stevenson has thrown her support behind a bid for Wolverhampton to host the Armed Forces Day National Event in 2021.
In a letter to Johnny Mercer MP, the Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Jane has supported the application from the Armed Forces Covenant Officer in Wolverhampton, Anita Cund, for the event to take place in the city.
She writes: “The scale of commemorations [in Wolverhampton] for armed forces events is very impressive. Wolverhampton residents have always taken the issue of supporting our brave soldiers and veterans seriously.”
Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday in June every year. This year, it will take place on 27th June, and the National Event will be held in Scarborough. The national event is intended to put the host town or city in the spotlight, gathering national media and public interest. Applications to host the 2021 National Event close on 20th March.
Jane said: “I am enormously proud to see the efforts of many people in Wolverhampton to see the Armed Forces Day National Event held here in 2021. Our city has a rich history of supporting armed forces from across the world, and I have had the pleasure of seeing this up close as a city councillor and now as one of the city’s MPs.
“So I was delighted to be asked to support the bid to host the 2021 National Event, and I have written to the Ministry of Defence and urged them to agree to the event being held here in Wolverhampton.”
