Jane Stevenson, MP for Wolverhampton North East, has launched a residents' survey following the news that several greenbelt sites in her constituency are being put forward for housing development.
The Black Country Local Plan, which goes before Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet this week for approval, contains proposals to build more than 800 homes on green space in Bushbury and Wood Hayes.
The sites are a mixture of council-owned and privately-owned, but Jane has criticised the Labour-run council for putting forward its own greenbelt land ahead of brownfield and derelict sites across the city.
Now she has launched an online survey to get residents’ views ahead of a full public consultation due to take place in August and September.
The draft Black Country Plan outlines a proposal for 532 homes to be built on land next to Northycote Lane, Legs Lane and Bushbury Lane in Bushbury. 303 homes are also planned for land next to Wood Hayes Road, Belton Avenue and Sundour Crescent in Wood Hayes, Fallings Park.
Jane said: “I am completely opposed to these plans to build over 800 homes on green spaces across Wolverhampton North East, and I know thousands of residents will also have serious concerns. With so little green space in our city as it is, the council must look at other options for housing before considering any greenbelt development.
“We can all think of brownfield or derelict sites in Wolverhampton which should be built on first, particularly in and around the city centre. There are also more than 1,100 empty homes in the city, which is a shocking amount when you think of the waiting lists for social housing in Wolverhampton.
“I would urge everyone to complete my short survey so that I can hear from as many people as possible before the official public consultation opens in August.”
